Um Ali is a tasty, savory sweet dessert. It's basic, yes. But its flavor totally has you fooled.
There are many ways and different ingredients people use, when making this dish. But it all sums down to preference.
For example, my cousin puts pine nuts and cashews in her Um Ali, it's not for me though. You may also substitute the raisins with blueberries (fresh or dried). So basically Um Ali has a wide range of possibilities.
This is my personal favorite, hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do.
8 butter croissant
3 tbsp dark raisins
3 tbsp flaked almonds
3 tbsp pistachio nuts
3 tbsp powdered coconut
1 can nestle sweetened condensed milk (395g)
1 tsp vanilla essence
4 cups water
250 ml or 1 cup whipping creme, whipped
Pre-heat oven to 400 F.
Halve the croissants, then slice.
Mix the croissants slivers, raisins, almonds, pistachio and coconut in an overproof deep dish.
In a large saucepan, mix the water, condensed milk and vanilla. Bring to a boil.
Pour milk mixture over croissants, leave to soak.
Spoon or pipe the whipped creme oven the ready mixture and pop into the oven uncovered.
Bake for 20-30 minutes, when the Um Ali is ready, put the oven on broil until just golden.
